Our client in Kenya is looking for a Lead Curation Manager for East Africa. This role involves collaborating with the team to create high-quality music curation offerings, such as playlists and DJ mixes, tailored to diverse musical tastes. The manager will be responsible for overseeing a team of curators and DJs, providing them with guidance, feedback, and support to ensure the consistent delivery of top-notch curated music content. Additionally, the manager will play a crucial role in establishing locally relevant partnerships with key stakeholders in the music industry, media outlets, cultural institutions, and other relevant organizations. These partnerships aim to raise awareness and boost usage of the service, utilizing local expertise and insights to make the platform more appealing to East Africa audiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the team to achieve high-quality music curation offerings, including playlists and DJ mixes, tailored to diverse musical tastes.
  • Manage a team of curators and DJs, providing guidance, feedback, and support to ensure the consistent delivery of high-quality curated music content.
  • Establish locally relevant partnerships with key stakeholders in the music industry, media outlets, cultural institutions, and other relevant organizations to drive awareness and increase usage of the service. These partnerships should leverage local expertise and insights to enhance the platform’s appeal to East African audiences.
  • Collaborate with the Music Licensing team to identify additional content to enhance the service.
  • Create a rolling editorial calendar to guide content creation and curation efforts.
  • Conceptualize and execute continuous content improvement processes and campaigns focused on various musical tastes and calendar events.
  • Drive improvements of tools and techniques necessary to support a growing curated music offering.
  • Utilize data analysis to continuously refine the content offering, ensuring a fresh user experience for each listener.
  • Influencer Outreach: Assist in identifying and collaborating with influencers and content creators who resonate with our target audience.
  • Coordinate influencer partnerships and campaigns to amplify our reach and engagement on social media.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BS/BA) required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience in radio programming, A&R, music curation, or running an editorial calendar.
  • Deep domain knowledge, passion, and experience in curating music from up-and-coming and established artists.
  • Ability to leverage hard data and metrics to support assumptions and recommendations.
  • Willingness to set aside personal tastes and biases to curate music for a broad audience, including urban and vernacular, Gospel and Secular genres.
  • Proven track record of taking ownership and driving results.

  • Knowledge of current trends and history in both music and the music industry in East Africa.
  • Technical aptitude to learn and utilize web-based tools such as Google Sheets, Google Trends, and analytics.
  • Familiarity with mass market audience preferences.
  • Genuine love for music.
