Position: Chief Surveyor
Location: Zimbabwe
Brief
Our client in the mining sector is seeking an experienced and technically strong Chief Surveyor to provide strategic leadership, technical oversight, and operational management of the Survey Department.
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all survey activities support safe mining practices, accurate mine planning, and effective production execution. This role will drive continuous improvement, digital transformation, statutory compliance, and the integration of modern survey technologies and spatial data management systems across mining operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, mentor, and develop the Survey team to ensure high performance, technical excellence, and succession readiness.
- Manage team workloads, resource allocation, and training requirements.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Oversee all underground and/or open-pit survey activities, including pickups, mark-ups, installations, and survey control networks.
- Ensure accurate and timely delivery of survey data to support mine planning, production, and technical services.
- Maintain and update survey control systems, coordinate systems, and spatial databases.
- Manage and optimise the use of survey software platforms, including Deswik and associated digital systems.
- Ensure seamless integration of survey data into mine planning workflows and design processes.
- Drive digital transformation initiatives including digital mapping, scanning, automated data capture, and cloud-based spatial data management.
- Evaluate and implement new survey technologies, equipment, and software to improve operational efficiency.
- Ensure all survey activities comply with statutory requirements, company standards, and industry best practices.
- Maintain accurate survey records, plans, statutory submissions, and compliance documentation.
- Conduct audits of survey processes, equipment, and data integrity.
- Collaborate closely with Mine Planning, Geology, Production, and Technical Services teams.
- Provide technical input into mine designs, infrastructure projects, and long-term planning initiatives.
- Support reconciliation processes and ensure accurate spatial data for reporting and performance analysis.
- Prepare monthly survey reports, compliance reports, and departmental performance dashboards.
- Manage departmental budgets, equipment procurement, maintenance schedules, and contractor engagements.
- Contribute to strategic planning and continuous improvement initiatives.
Requirements:
- Degree or Diploma in Mine Surveying.
- Mine Surveyor’s Certificate of Competency or equivalent statutory qualification.
- Minimum 8 years’ experience in mining survey environments.
- At least 3–5 years’ experience in a senior supervisory or management role.
- Strong proficiency in Deswik software and digital survey systems.
- Experience with modern survey equipment, digital mapping, and spatial data management.
- Demonstrated experience in underground and/or open-pit mining operations.
- Strong understanding of survey legislation, mining standards, and compliance requirements.
- Excellent leadership, communication, planning, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and governance.
