Job Overview

The Airport Director is responsible for overseeing the overall operations, management, and strategic direction of an airport in Mozambique. This role ensures compliance with national and international aviation regulations, drives operational efficiency, and fosters a safe, secure, and customer-focused environment. The Airport Director will lead a diverse team, manage stakeholder relationships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operational Management: Oversee daily airport operations, including airside, landside, and terminal activities, ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance with Mozambican Civil Aviation Authority (IACM) regulations and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and ACI best practices.
  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement strategic plans to enhance airport performance, increase revenue streams, and improve passenger experience.
  • Financial Oversight: Manage the airport’s budget, monitor financial performance, and identify opportunities for cost optimization and revenue generation.
  • Safety and Security: Ensure compliance with safety and security protocols, including emergency response planning, risk management, and coordination with local authorities.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with the owners of the airport, airlines, government agencies, vendors, and other stakeholders to support airport operations and growth.
  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop a diverse team of airport staff, fostering a culture of accountability, professionalism, and collaboration.
  • Infrastructure Development: Oversee maintenance and development of airport facilities, ensuring they meet operational and passenger needs.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to national and international aviation standard, and industry best practices.
  • Customer Experience: Drive initiatives to enhance passenger satisfaction, including service quality, amenities, and efficient operations.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree or Master degree in Aviation Management.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in airport or aviation management, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
    • Proven track record in managing airport operations, preferably in a private or regional airport setting.
    • Experience working in Africa or developing countries is highly desirable.
  • Technical Skills:
    • In-depth knowledge of aviation regulations (ICAO, IACM, and other relevant standards).
    • Strong understanding of airport operations, including air traffic control, Airside Management, ground handling, and terminal management.
    • Financial acumen for budgeting, forecasting, and revenue management.
  • Leadership Skills:
    • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate diverse teams in a fast-paced environment.
    • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills under pressure.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, portugeuse.
  • Cultural Awareness: Sensitivity to Mozambican cultural and business practices, with the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in managing airport operations.
  • Familiarity with Mozambican aviation regulations and local business environment.
  • Certification in aviation management (e.g., ACI Diploma in Airport Operations, ICAO certifications).
  • Experience in negotiating contracts with airlines, client, or government entities and other key stakeholders.
